A teacher and scholar turned infantry officer describes the ghastly death of a comrade in the trenches at Wytschaete, where archaeological excavations have unearthed German positions (and the dead of the Battle of Messines) in recent years. A reconstructed trench system - "Bayernwald" - can still be seen and visited in this sector today.
